A few days ago, I attended a business meeting with my boss at Sheraton hotel. There was not much to the meeting except for welcoming the CEO of an Austrailian company who was coming for a week to hold seminars across the country on the product his company was marketing. Soon after we had held the welcome ceremony, we set out for the office. I got in my boss’s car to drive while he sat on the passenger’s side. We also had a few of our friends and colleagues who had come for the welcome ceremony sitted behind in the car. As soon as I started the engine,  an annoying sound started from the controls inside the car.

The indication light read “Parking brakes disengaged” (more…)

obama-hilary-inauguration

The inauguration of the 44th and 1st black president of the United States of America was realised on the 20th of January, this year. With regards to America’s standing as the leader of the free world, it was imperative that most countries that had foreign missions in America would have been represented at the inauguration one way or another. To buttress this, invitations were sent to such countries to have their delegates ably represented at the event. Nigeria, by default also got an invitation. We are the most populous black nation and the fifth largest seller of crude oil to the U.S. It would have been quite surprising if we weren’t invited. (more…)

I had some internet training with one of my friends yesterday evening. In fact, the training was supposed to have commenced yesterday morning but it commenced in the evening because my friend came in late. When he came, he narrated his ordeal to us. He had gone that morning to a bank in Ikorodu (GTB) to withdraw money and having completed that transaction successfully had moved to another bank immediately (UBA) in Ikorodu as well to pay in the money. A few minutes ago I saw President Obama (doesn’t it feel good to call him that) escort ex-president George Bush to the “Mobile One” helicopter and went back to the steps of the white house to wave at him as he was flown off the white house premises. That was the activity that culminated the inauguration of the 44th president of the United States of America. A few minutes before then the president had been sworn in at the Capitol Hill and had given a land mark inauguration speech.
I saw the camera view change time and time again from the crowd at the Capitol Hill to crowds in Memphis, Tennessee, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia and so on. Even in the National Museum was gathered a crowd to watch on screen the inauguration process. Crowds gathered in the streets of New York to participate in this uncommon but popular mark of history. I was moved to tears (more…)

I can’t help but post about current happenings on the Nigerian scene as I get wind of them in the news. I try as much as possible to follow major news stories online at www.nigeriaworld.com everyday to at least have an idea on what is happening in this my beloved nation.

Many times I have in mind to write on something else but I soon discover that I can’t put away a gnawing at my heart to further spread some news to the regular visitors to my site. Just in case they haven’t read it elsewhere(taking into consideration those who live outside Nigeria).

I just read this article on ICPC recruiting 30,000 volunteers to battle corruption (more…)

nairadollar-on-stairs1

This is quite a lengthy article but a must read for every Nigerian who loves his country. Just when we were beginning to rejoice that our economy was moving vertically upwards and that our currency was getting stronger, something seems to have pulled out the floor from under us and everything seems to be plummeting towards ground zero. I just read this article in the newspapers and feel I need to post it as it is. If those managing the economy of this country are so intent on destroying it, then we who are bound by oaths to save this country need to rise up and deliver the future. The president yesterday or today inaugurated a team that will look into and combat the financial meltdown that is upon us in the country. As usual, he has chosen a reactive means rather than a proactive one to address serious national issues.  I find this article very insightful and interesting. It doesn’t mean that the article portrays my views about the situation or that I totally support the facts but it’s really an eye-opener. It’s titled “Naira’s strategic crash”. (more…)

If wealth is lost, nothing is lost; if health is lost, something is lost; if character is lost, everything is lost……….

I heard that last week, Reuben Abati, a foremost journalist with the Guardian newspapers wrote an article of how his email account was hacked into and his friends had all received emails allegedly from him stating that he was currently in India attending a conference and his daughter who was very ill and needed to undergo a life saving operation urgently. The mail stated that he urgently needed N250,000 to balance the operation fees and that those who were willing to help should pay to a particular account with the details of the account included. obasanjo-noun-graduation

I want to say congrats to the former president for eventually getting a university degree. It’s just a pity that he got it at a time after he had ruled the country twice. Perharps, had he gotten it earlier, the country may have benefited from his experience in a higher institution. Albeit, I don’t think the receipt of a degree by a former president should have caused such inconvenience and suffering to the people of the state. The roads were blocked completely at major points in Victoria Island, Lagos on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 simply because Obasanjo was getting a Bachelor’s degree. What would happen when he got a Doctorate or if he became a professor. Bill Clinton became a visiting professor after his tenure as president of the United States of America and the Secret Service didn’t harass anybody either on or off the campus.

I really don’t understand (more…)

Africa has been dubbed the untouched and virgin continent. This was due to the seeming unscathing of African countries in the global meltdown that characterised the latter part of 2008. African seems to have escaped almost wholly from the economic recession that hit the world and crushed many countries and multinationals in other continents of the world. Iceland is bankrupt, auto makers in the US are bankrupt; Mega Banks in UK, Japan, Switzerland, US, Belgium, Germany and many other countries of the world would have gone under but for aid from their governments. Albeit, many banks have still being crushed in the wake of the recession.

However, Nigeria for one has been touched by the recession. Even though the Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria has kept assuring Nigerians that we are beyond the reach of the economic whiplash swinging across the globe, happenings in our own economy are pointers to the fact that his assurances hold no water. Examples are: (more…)
